EMERALD KNIGHT
An Emerald Knight is a strong chess player with opening preparation, middle-game planning, and endgame technique, but still makes some careless moves. An Emerald Knight can identify common openings and defenses, and has competed in at least one rated chess tournament with good sportsmanship.

- Opening Survey
- identify common openings and defenses, categorized as open, closed, semi-open, or semi-closed.
- Setups
- set-up a middle-game position with side to move, and the player chooses the side.
- Machine Mode
- play one practice game with the "Chess Calculation" sheet
- Opening Traps
- survey common opening traps.
- Centralization
- teach centralization; play practice games focused on centralization.
- More Mates
- more mate in three quizzes (at least 20) from Polgar's big CHESS book.
- King's Gambit
- describe basic themes and main lines of the King's Gambit, both King's Knight and King's Bishop; player tries some practice games in the opening.
- Practice Games
- ten notated practice games at rank
- Steinitz
- go over ten Steinitz games
- Tournament
- must compete in official chess tournament and show good sportsmanship.
- Promotion Game
- Win a game from a higher-rated player getting Emerald Knight odds.
Requirements continue to evolve and may therefore change at any time. Substitutions may be granted in some cases to award particularly strong play.
